About Us
At the Hunter ICU Support Group, we are passionately committed to providing comprehensive support to survivors of critical illness and their families. The road to recovery after an ICU hospitalization is often lengthy and fraught with challenges, extending well beyond the moment of discharge. Our mission is to ensure that no one—neither survivors nor their families—navigates this journey alone. We aspire to cultivate a welcoming and compassionate environment where individuals can share their experiences, find solace, and embark on a path of healing, both physically and emotionally. By nurturing a strong sense of community, we empower survivors to feel seen, heard, and supported as they rebuild their lives.
Surviving a critical illness frequently results in lasting consequences that transcend the immediate medical crisis. Many ICU survivors grapple with enduring physical limitations, including muscle weakness, fatigue, and challenges in performing everyday activities. Alongside these physical hurdles, the psychological impact can be equally daunting. Common issues such as memory loss, disorienting delusions from the ICU experience, and sleep disturbances can plague survivors, while anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often linger long after hospital discharge. These challenges can be isolating and difficult to cope with for both survivors and their families.
Through our support group, we provide a safe haven where survivors can share their stories, connect with others who have faced similar challenges, and—most importantly—realize that they are not alone in their recovery. Many participants discover that discussing their experiences with those who genuinely understand leads to emotional relief and the beginning of psychological healing. Our group also offers invaluable support for family members, who frequently carry the emotional weight of caregiving, providing them with guidance and reassurance.
At the Hunter ICU Support Group, we are dedicated not only to emotional support but also to delivering practical resources for ongoing recovery. We connect survivors with healthcare professionals, such as therapists, rehabilitation specialists, and counselors, who can address their specific physical, mental, and emotional needs. By linking survivors and their families with these experts, we aim to foster holistic recovery—helping individuals regain their strength, confidence, and well-being as they reintegrate into their daily lives. Our ultimate goal is to build a resilient community where survivors and their loved ones can find the encouragement, guidance, and resources they need to move forward.
